Copán is an archaeological site of the Maya civilization in western Honduras. The site functioned as the political, civil and religious center of the Copan Valley and was composed of a main complex with several secondary complexes. The Hieroglyphic Stairway Plaza is one of the outstanding structures of Mayan culture, displaying 1,800 individual glyphs. Copán was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.
