Kumbh Mela is a major festival celebrated by Hindus across four river-bank pilgrimage sites in the course of 12 years. Each site’s celebration is based on a distinct set of astrological positions, dependent on the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter. The festival is marked by a ritual dip in the waters, believed to cleanse bathers of sins. It is also a celebration of community combining fairs, education, religious discourse, charity events, and entertainment, and providing a sense of shared harmony and heritage.
