The Mara is a river in Narok County that lies across the migration path of ungulates in the Maasai Mara ecosystem. The river is a vital source of water for grazing animals within the reserve. While during the dry season it may become shallow, it can swell to up to twice its normal size after a heavy rainfall. This situation can create rapids in the river, which may lead to a shortage of food for predators that cannot cross the river to hunt.
