Also known as the gnu, the wildebeest is a member of the antelope family that has a large, box-like head with curving horns. Every year, wildebeest, Thomson’s gazelle, zebra, eland, and other ungulates (hoofed animals) participate in what has been called “the greatest show on earth” – The Great Wildebeest Migration. It is unclear how the wildebeest know in which way to migrate, but it is generally believed that their journey is dictated primarily by their response to the weather, i.e., they follow the rains and the growth of new grass.
