 (b) (1) (b) (3) SUBJECT':  Reporting of Chinese Nuclear Test on 16 October 1964 This same statement was immediately furnished to Mr. Elder and was furnished to JAEIC members as they started to arrive at about 1145.  The JABIC members immediately relayed this unclassified statement to their offices, and the undersigned attempted to contact staff members of the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic-Energy and the Senate Preparedness Investigating Subcommittee at a few minutes before 1200.   Mr. Conway of the SCAB returned our call at 1220 and was given the preliminary statement. He was later called at approximately 1250 and was given the content of the official JAEIC statement which was prepared and distributed at approximately 1240, 5.  The undersigned briefed the DCI on the test at 1215 while the JASIC meeting was in progress. 6.  The undersigned was called by Dr. Wheelon from California at approximately 1210 and Dr. Wheelon was briefed on the situation. 7.  The AD/ONE was advised at approximately 1130 of the situation at that time. 8.  The usual i     -    distribution of JAEIC- statements was made at approximately 1240 and e s a   en wire to the White House at about the same time.  A member of the Stennis Subcommittee staff was finally reached at about 1300 and was advised.   A separate request for information from Senator Symington at approximately 1430 through the Legislative Counsel was serviced. APPROVED  FOR RELEASE DATE:  NOV 2007
