DAILY BRIEF
13 JULY 1965
1. Vietnam
Peiping seems to be increasingly
nervous that US planes might attack
targets in China. Recent propaganda
statements out of Peiping are apparently
directed at trying to persuade the US
not to extend the Vietnam war in their
direction.
In a sharp response to the alleged
invasion of US aircraft in the Hokou
area of China, the leading Peiping daily
asserted: "We will not attack unless we
are attacked; if we are attacked, we
will certainly counterattack."
2. Dominican Republic Although the Imbert and Caamano
forces assent to Garcia Godoy as presi-
dent of a provisional government, neither
has shown any disposition to soften its
demands on other points at issue.
Ambassador Bunker says he is not
?
hopeful that their disagreements can be
ironed out by 4 August, and he has recom-
mended postponement of the Special Inter-
American Conference scheduled for that
date.
two
Communist-dominated groups, the Dominican
Popular Movement and the Fourteenth of
June Movement, signed a pact Sunday to
continue fighting, against Caamano if
necessary. They propose to attack Inter-
American Peace Force positions soon in
hopes of securing weapons.
