Dear Senator Symington:
September 26, 1973
Thank you for your letter concerning the characterization
of Lt. Gen. Vernon Walters appearing in our "Guide to American
Government."
I have re-examined the memoranda published in the
NEW YORK TIMES and have concluded that our statement that
Walters "made an effort all along to co-operate with the White
House cover-up attempt" is inaccurate. We should have written:
"The memos disclosed that Walters at first made an effort to
co-operate with the White House staff but in the end he resisted
pressures to involve the CIA."
Please be assured that should we reprint the article,
it will contain this correction. And thank you again for calling
this matter to my attention;
