Some 30 students will be accompanying me to Washington in order to conduct interviews and to obtain briefings for their re- search. Enclosed is a list of their names, social security numbers, and topics of interest. We would like to receive some overall briefings as a group and then to have individuals to meet particular OPA analysts. If it is not feasible to have the separate sessions, nevertheless, we would like to have general briefings that might cover some of the topics indirectly. We would appreciate receiving briefings on the following topics: 1) political instability and external threats concerning the Persian Gulf region; 2) Soviet agricultural and energy problems, with special reference to Russian dependence on American grain and expected need for Persian Gulf oil; 3) sub version in Central America, particular- ly regarding El Salvador. The best times for us to visit the Agency are the afternoons of February 23 or 24, 1981. We realize the sensitivity of dealing with such topics of cur- rent interest and will avoid attributing views to individual analysts or to( the Agency as a whole. I plan to call your office on February 23, 1981, to see if you have designated a staff person to serve as liaison with our group. In the past, I have worked with of the (b)(3) External Research Office, by the way.
