Brazil-US
Nuclear Fuel Issue
Brazilian leaders are increasingly
worried about the possible enactment of
a bill now before the US Congress that
is intended to prevent other nations
from using US nuclear technology or
fuels for making nuclear weapons. The
Brazilians fear that the legislation will
be used to deny the export of nuclear
fuel now scheduled for delivery to
Brazil in mid-December
If the bill is adopted, Brazil will either
have to find an alternative source for
enrichment processing for the plant being
built by Westinghouse, or be forced to
accept additional US safeguards.
the Brazilians
intend to take strong retaliatory action if
the fuel shipment is denied.
Such actions would e consistent with
measures enacted by the Brazilian Govern-
ment this year to protest US pressure, in-
cluding the abrogation earlier this week of
all bilateral military accords with the US.
