(UThtliii+) From the Archives: Reports of Castro's Death in 1956 Greatly Exaggerated (UHATLIII) Fidel Castro was killed in 1956 by Cuban military forces while leading an invading force on the eastern coast of Cuba, according to the Havana press. The CIA reported the press item in a 1956 Current Intelligence Bulletin (CIB). According to the CIB, which was recently reviewed by the DI team at the CIA Declassification Center, Castro had announced that he was returning to Cuba for a "fight to the death," and was killed in a military action. The report of his death, though, was greatly exaggerated as Castro succeeded in seizing power in Cuba in 1959. This is a record.
