Subsection 552, I am requesting all documents related in whole or in part to direct or indirect contacts between the Central Intelligence Agency and the West German rock and roll band The Scorpions, between 1985 and 1992. The Scorpions were one of the first western popular music acts to perform behind the iron Curtain, and participated in the Moscow Music Peace Festival, an event featuring numerous western rock acts, on August 12-13, 1989. I am a representative of the news media. This request is for an article I am writing for The New Yorker magazine, where I am a contributor, so a punctual reply within the time allotted by FOIA will be greatly appreciated. If there are any fees associated with fulfilling this request, please notify me before processing if the amount exceeds $300.00. If CIA regards any of these documents as potentially exempt from disclosure under the FOIA, I hope that the agency will nevertheless exercise its discretion to disclose them. If you deny all or any pan of this request, please cite each specific exemption you think justifies your refusal to release the information, as twill appeal if necessary. Finally, if you determine that some portions of the documents in question cannot be released, the FOIA requires the release of all reasonably segregable portions of records.
