Statement by LCI R; James Woolsey to CIA Employees
0800 Hours 22 February 1994
Good morning. I have some sad news for all of you.
Yesterday, the FBI arrested CIA employee
Aldrich Hazen (Rick) Ames because he is alleged to have
committed espionage against the United States. This arrest
is the result of a very professional counterintelligence
effort by the CIA and FBI together, Because of legal
considerations related to this prosecution, I cannot expand
on this statement right now. /n the next few hours, after
the initial court appearance, I will provide you with
additional details.
I realize that this bad news is going to come as a shock
to all of you. We expect that the arrest.is going to draw
widespread attention in ,the United States and in the
international media. All of us here at CIA undoubtedly face
a difficult period of public criticism and self-examination.
During the course of the investigation and the judicial
prOcess, it is important that all employees decline to
comment Publicly on this matter even after a public
announcement. I'll be speaking to You again on this later
today.
