(U) A former Agency independent contractor was sentenced on 13 February 2007 in US District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina following his conviction for one count of felony assault resulting in serious bodily injury and three counts of simple assault. This followed a seven-day jury trial in Raleigh, North Carolina, in August 2006. 2. (U) An investigation by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) disclosed that the then-paramilitary contractor had beaten an Afghan detainee at a US Army base at Asadabad, Afghanistan, in June 2003. The detainee died less than a day after the second beating. The contractor had not been trained or authorized to conduct interrogations. 3. (U) The former Agency independent contractor was sentenced to 100 months of incarceration and three years of supervised release. He was the first American civilian convicted of detainee abuse during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. 4.
