The CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE BULLETIN is produced by the
Director of Central Intelligence to meet his responsibilities for providing
current intelligence bearing on issues of national security to the President,
the National Security Council, and other senior government officials. It
is produced in consultation with the Departments of State and Defense.
When, because of the time factor, adequate consultation with the depart-
ment of primary concern is not feasible, items or portions thereof are pro-
duced by CIA and marked with an asterisk.
Interpretations of intelligence information in this publication represent
mediate and preliminary views which are subject to modification in the
light of further information and more complete analysis.

*Korea: Pyongyang clings to an unyielding stance
regarding the crew of the Pueblo.
An article in the authoritative Nodong Sinmun,
broadcast on 25 January, said those who had violated
North Korea's sovereignty were criminals who must "be
dealt with by law" and receive "due punishment."

Chong-hui is under increasing pressure from within his
regime to take action against the north after the North
Korean raid into Seoul on 22 January./
r-The Soviet Union is keeping the US naval task force
in tie Sea of Japan under close surveillance. Yesterday,
a Kildin- class guided missile destroyer joined a Soviet
intelligence trawler already trailing the USS Enterprise.
Additionally, a Riga-class destroyer escort and an oiler,
which had been operating on their usual stations in the
Tsushima Strait, steamed north and are now shadowing
the carrierj
In its first extended comment on the capture of the
Pueblo, Moscow labeled the incident the latest "provocative

action" in "Washington's dangerous course." A TASS
statement, issued yesterday, cast doubt on the US version
of the capture by citing Commander I3ucher's alleged con-
fession. TASS briefly reported the US reserve call-up,
terming it a "threatening act."
Peking has yet to mention the North Korean action
against the Pueblo and is ignoring the North Korean raid
on Seoul.
