Established in its present form by a Public Law enacted in 1947, BGN operates tlirough several committees to standardize names of geographic features in the United States, foreign areas, Antarctica, undersea areas, arid extraterrest,ri~~'. bodies. r'lccording to the law, the Board shares its responsibility with the Secretary of the Interior. In tlie exercise of this responsibility, tha Secretary approves names recommended by BGN, appoints mernbe:s to certain committees, and ratifies principles and procedures. Members of the Board representing various Federal departments and agencies, serve for two-year terins. - Essential to the Board's function of standardizing names is the promulgation of names information. Traditionally, n ames of geo~,naphic features outside the Linited States have been published in a series of BGN gazet- teers and the needs of a wide range of users-both within the Federal Government and elsewliere-have been well ~ served by these publications. 'I'hz present gazetteer is the one of a new series of place-name documents that is quite similar to the earlier BGN gazetteers, the principal difference being the addition of Universal Transverse ~~lercatar - (tJTM) grid coordinates. These data allow even wider use of the g~zetteers because they perr:~it feature identification by the UTM reference system, which is used in mGny areas. Other features of the gazetteer are explained in the introduction. The responsibilitv for producing and distributing tl~e ~azetteers has been assigned to the Defense Mapping Agency as part of its overall mission of supporting foreign-area scientiFic studie~. for the Federal Governinent. The - production of gazetteers is based on the work of linguists, geographers, and cartographers, who use a variety of source materials. ~Vherever possible gazetteer production is carried out with the cooperation of the concerned country. RICHARn R. RANDAI.L _ Executive Secretary United States Board on Geographic Names iii APPROVED FOR RELEASE: 2007/02/20: CIA-RDP01-00707R000200060009-2 APPROVED FOR RELEASE: 2007/02120: CIA-RDP01-00707R000200060009-2 INTRODUCTION ~'his Razetteer conta.;ns approximately 3,1~10 entries for plac~s and fcatures in Andorra. Re;earch for the publi~ation u: a~ ~umpleted in August 1981 and the names in it supersede those in all previous lists con- t:~ined in i~l:N Gazetteers or in I)MA publications for lhe area. The eritries include names approved by the U.S. B~,ard on ~.eographic Names (BGti ) and unapproved variant names, the latter cross-referenced to the appro~ed name. i%se~s oflhe (;crzetlec~r,hould lcu~~,ys r~~'i~r lo miiiii entric~s tnr ~~ppru~~ecl nitmes. The basic na.mes ccrverage corresponds t.o that on maps at the scale of 1:10,000. Entries include the _ names of first nrc~er aciministrative divisions, populated places, and, various other cultural, topographic and hydrographic feat~ares. Sheet NK 31-0~ of Series 1501 covers the entire country and all names appearing on the slieet are in- cluded in the gazetteer either as BGN-approved names or unappr4ved variants. No airfield names are in- cluded. Most features can be identified an~i located by the approved name on orie or both of the f'ollowing sources: 1. Valls d'Ando?ra, Consell General, 1976; scale 1:10,000. ' 2. Valls d'Andorra, Consell General, 1976; scale 1:50,000. Naines used on the Consell General maps were gathered by local toponymic commissions, and a~~- proved by t}~e official linguistic commission with the assistance of Mr. Albert Manent. The overall quality of names in this gazetteer is rated as excellent. A co-principality, with an area of 465 square kilometers, Andorra is located on the southern slo~.e of the eastern Pyrenees between France and Spain. The Bishop of Urgel and the President of the Republic of' France exercise joint sovereignty and each has established a Perznanent Delegation for Andorran Aft'airs. These delegations act on proposals submitted by a general council consisting of 28 elected members representing six parishes. Catalan is the principal spoken language. /nlerprelalron ofenh~ies Code numbers and letters are used in this gazetteer in order to conserve space and provide information ~ concisely. Names.-Approved standard names and unapproved variant names appear in the first column. The variant names are a!ways cross-referenced to the standard names by use of the word "see." Names contain- ing ~ene~~ic and other elements preceding the specific term (except names of populated places) arE alphabetized by the specific part; thus Riu de 1'Astrell, the name of a stream, is listed as Astrell, Riu de 1'. Where part of a;iame is underlined, the use of the part not underlined is optional. If two or more n~mes are approved for a feature, each is identified in brackets and any or all may be used. - I.anguage labels are used to identify alternate local names of non-international features. Local names of international features are identified by m2jor-political-entity labels. WherP only one country is iden- tified parenthetically, no name is available for that feature in the adjacent country. _ The spelling of Catalan na~nes is in accord with standard Catalan orthography. Diacritic marks used in approved Catalan names in this gazetteer are the acute accent grave accent dieresis and cedilla ( , 17esiyttulian.-The second column contains designations or abbreviatians of designations, as listed - below. In order to reduce ambiguity, the sense in which designatinri ternls are used and the range of features - to which they are applied in this gazelteer are stated in the list. In ~?ndorrd some of the features do not fit _ precisely into the categories used to aesignate them and others could be designated in more t~ian one way.
