Dear General Donovan:

June 24th., 1945.
Has the time yet coma when you would again
care to hear the opinions of Dr. Hans Thomsen?
I full well understand that you will not
approvd of sending me to him in any official capacity, but I have
thought you might consider permitting ma to secure a passport
and visa, as a private citizen, to go to Sweeden to m.eot with him.
I take it for granted that he would talk
with MD again as f,..ieely as he did formerly. I could report his
thoughts to your agent in Stockholm. No German has proved his
true friendship for che United States as has Hans Thomsen. I
can sae only good from such contact with him.
I would be glad to have James Murphy go with
my and sit in at each conference. You have full confidence in
him, and his reports to you. I am willing to psy my own wxpinses
of such a trip if that would facilitate your decision.
I deeply fe.A. th.dit Thomsen could do more
than any other German to align GermunLpublic opinion to our sid,
and help us in securing cooperation of the German people with us.
Even if you ct.nnot publicly use Thomsen because of his Nazi past
connections, you can privately ascertgin his judgement, if tat
seems valuable to you. I believe he would gladly cooperate with
you.
SHOULD YOU FEEL AT SOMEONE ELSE IS BETTER
QUALIFIED THAN I to meet with Thomsen or to introduce him to
JaMeS Murphy, I would gladly step aside. I merely feel tit
Thomson Khould be used by the United States. I know he liked
ma personally and respected my judgement.
Perhaps you would at this stage approve
of my seeing him without official sanction. Will you give this
some thought? I will serve you if you are willing.
Cordially and faithftaly yours
