This report is one in a series on Soviet Ground Force and Logistic
installations being prepared for a DIA/CIA Panel. The series is being
coordinated, published and disseminated by NPIC. The photographic
analysis is being performed by,the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group,
the CIA Photographic Intelligence Division (NPIC), and the Production
Center 1Pla (DIA). The photographic analysis for this particular re-
port was performed by the NPIC Photographic Analysis Group.
In the interest of uniformity, the titles and letter designators for
the facilities observed at these installations are identical with those
appearing in the project requirement. When a specific facility is not
observed both its title and letter designator are omitted in the report.
Titles and letter designators for the various facilities are as
follows: (A) railroad service, (B) road service, (C) landing strips,
(D) administrative and troop housing areas, (E) storage areas, (F) am-
munition storage areas, (G) POL storage areas, (H) other buildings and
facilities, (J) equipment storage/maintenance areas, (K) athletic fields,
(L) small-- arms firing ranges, (M) driver training areas, (N) tank/
assault gun firing ranges, (P) flat trajectory firing ranges, (Q) artillery
emplacements (batteries), (R) infantry or combined arms field train-
ing area or courses, (S) special training facilities, (T) unidentified
facilities or tracking activity.

The Kalinin Training Area Chapayevka is
located 10.5 kilometers (km) southwest of Kalinin
Airfield (Figure 1). The BE/TDI list this in-
stallation as Kalinin Barracks and Training Area
Chapayevka; however, no permanent barracks
area is observed.
This installation covers approximately
31,190 acres and contains 4 administration build-
ings, 3 bivouac areas, 16 storage buildings, 35
support buildings, 21 ammunition storage build-
ings, 6 small-arms firing ranges, 2 probable
small-arms firing ranges, numerous per-
sonnel trenches, an athletic field, a prob-
able wheeled- vehicle -mounted automatic-wea-
pons firing range, 3 tank/assault-gun firing
ranges, 2 field artillery batteries, a figure-8
wheeled-vehicle driver-training course, and a
combination track and wheeled-vehicle driver-
training course (Figure 2).

DESCRIPTION OF INSTALLATION
Road Service
An all-weather road provides access to
Kalinin.
Administration and Troop Housing Areas
Area Dl is a bivouac area which contains an
administration building, 7 storage buildings, and
6 support buildings.
Area D2 is a bivouac area which contains 2
administration buildings, 3 storage buildings,
and 4 support buildings.
Area D3 is a bivouac area which contains an
administration building, 4 storage buildings, and
9 support buildings.
Ammunition Storage Area
Area F contains 21 ammunition storage
buildings and 7 support buildings.
25X1A POL Storage Areas
Kalinin Petroleum Storage No 2 (BE No
located at 56-51-12N 035-57-42E
contains 2 large, 2 medium, and 9 small POL
storage tanks.
Kalinin Petroleum Storage Volga Southeast
located at 56-47-42N
036-00-25E contains 44 large, 11 medium, and
10 small POL storage tanks.
Other Buildings
Three support buildings are scattered
throughout the training area.
Small-Arms Firing Ranges
This installation contains 8 small-arms
firing ranges. L1 is 960 by 55 feet, L2 is 290
by 60 feet, L3 is 640 by 95 feet, L4 is 340 by
175 feet, L5 is 340 by 140 feet, L6 is 580 by 55
feet, L7 is 525 by 85 feet, and L8 is 640 by 85
feet. Ranges L7 and L8 are probable small-
arms firing ranges.
Driver-Training Areas
Area Ml is a tracked- and wheeled-vehicle
closed-circuit driver-training course. Six man-

made hills which are used to simulate hill cross-
ings were observed in this area.
Area M2 is a figure-8 wheeled-vehicle
driver-training course.
Tank/Assault-Gun Firing Ranges
Area Ni is a 4,350-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 2,040-foot firing lanes
and 4 moving-target runs. This range has 2
support buildings.
Area N2 is a 4,900-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range with three 2,600-foot firing lanes
and 4 moving-target runs. This range has 2
support buildings.
Area N3 is a 3,780-foot tank/assault-gun
firing range having three 2,630-foot firing lanes
and 4 moving-target runs. This range has 2
storage and 2 support buildings.

Artillery Emplacements (Batteries)
Area Q1 is a field artillery battery with 3
firing positions which appeared active of
-coverage.
Area Q2 is a field artillery battery with 6
firing positions. Four of these positions are
"in-line." All six positions appeared active on
-coverage.
Infantry or Combined-Arms Field Training Area
or Courses
Area R contains numerous personnel
trenches.
Special Training Facilities
Area S is a course probably used for auto-
matic weapons mounted on wheeled vehicles.
The range has 18 moving-target runs with a
maximum firing distance of 1,300 feet.
