SA-3 MISSILE SITE DEPLOYMENT, USSR DURING 1969
ABSTRACT
During 1969 the USSR increased its SA-3 missile site deployment about 57 percent
? over the number deployed at the end of 1968. Ninety-two new Soviet sites were ident-
ified on 1969 photography, for a total of 254 SA-3 missile sites. This report con-
tains a location map and six additional maps keyed to a table giving construction
status, occupancy, identification, and negation dates of sites deployed in 1969.
BASIC DESCRIPTION
New sites were constructed in all areas having previous SA-3 deployment, with
the exception of Vladivostok. An SA-3 barrier has been constructed along the Baltic
coast from Leningrad to the Polish border. There has been a heavy deployment of
point defenses along the Black Sea and in the areas of Brest, Kiev, Khabarovsk, and
Svobodnyy. Other point defenses which have been augmented include Moscow, Murmansk,
Severodvinsk, Plesetsk, Olenegorsk, Petropavlovsk, and Baku. Deployment patterns for
the following sites cannot be determined: one site at Minsk; one site at Ignat-
Yevka, along the Chinese border; and one site at Tbilisi. The construction status,
occupancy, identification, and negation dates of all sites deployed in 1969 are shown
in Table 1. Sixteen sites were not identified during exploitation of the mission on
which they were first imaged. These cases are noted in the remarks column of
Table 1.
