1. This memorandum is in response to the referenced requirement requesting
a rail and traffic analysis of Rail Line 5 which extends from Chongju (39 41N .T
125 13E) to Supung-dong (40 26N - 124 57E). The location of Rail Line 5 is
shown on the accompanying map titled Index to Strip Maps whereas the detailed
features of the rail line (abandoned segments, new construction, spur lines,.
and accurate plotting of the rail line) are shown on the two strip maps.
2. An analysis of Rail Line 5 reveals that alignment, gage, and number
of tracks is correctly annotated on the map (CIA/RR/ER 62-63, Transportation
in North Korea: Achievements and Prospects 1950-1961 and 1967 Plan . There
are three rail spurs that appear abandoned, however.
(1) A spur line extending from the main line north of Namsi to
Namsi Airfield appears to have been abandoned Strip map i7.
(2) A spur line east and arallel to the main line at Kusong
has been abandoned zs-trip Map
(3) Where Rail Line 5 crosses the Yalu River north of Sup'ung-dong,
the western-most bridge has been abandoned and all traffic is*confined
to the eastern bridge `trip Map 27.
There is no evidence of new construction or electrification along Rail Line 5.
3. The traffic analysis on Line 5 revealed that only one southbound
steam train was operating on the line. No additional details on this train
were available.
