Approved For Release 200 : CIA-RDP02R0j0' f 450?jj 29a "Sov SSatellite Capabilities and Intentions with Respect to Action Against Yugoslavia in 1951" February 9, 1961 I, SOVIET OBJECTI"S 'WITS REGARD To yUGOSTAVIA The Soviet Union has demonstrated great sensitivity over the continued survival of the Tito regime. end has made clear that it desires the replace- ment of this regime by one subservient to Moscow. Publicly, the Soviet Union has never suggested that it feels committed in- any way to get rid of Tito or that it alms to bring about his overthrow through the direct use of force. Instead the Zromlin?s announced position hoe been that with the "unm"king" of Tito-by the Cominform, the Yugoslav people can be expected to take appropriate action. Confirmed Soviet and iatellite activity with regard to Tito so far has been limited to (1) economloally and politically isolating Yug i1awia from the Soviet orbit, (2) carrying on propaganda agitation for action by the Yugo- 'lay 'neorle, and (3) attempting to insulate the world Communist movement from Titoiat Influences. Y1-ere have been unconfirmed reports that the Soviet Union and its satellites have also nlantod agents in Yugoslavia, particularly in Tugoelav Macedonia, and heve, actively -promoted scattered efforts at Pabotage. There have been no reported instances of a Soviet.-satellite attempt to prectpi- tat8 and give support to a guerrilla uprising. Beyond this, the Sovtot Union and, more particularly, the satellites have subjected the Tito regime to a war of nerves (1) directly thrr h be 8e x
