Approved For Oase 2004/03/23 : CIA-RD 80W00165.2400~ 3?'0"I''- MEMORANDUM FOR THE RECORD SUBJECT: Meeting with ABC GOOD MORNING AMERICA Representatives 21 June 1977 1 Sofiya Selby-Wr.i ght and Charles L. M. Woolsey of ABC's GOOD MORNING AMERICA, visited with me today to discuss the possibility of doing a segment of their show at CIA. 2.' They made the following-proposals: a. Their preference would be a walking tour with the DCI during which he would discuss with David Hartman the importance of intelligence and the human side of CIA-- the kinds of people who work here-and what they do. b. Having been told of the difficulties, security and others,-presented by filming in the building, they said they would be perfectly happy to do as much of the work on a -Saturday as-possible. c. In the interest of expediency (for us and them) .they might want to use-two crews and one cameraman to do hand-held cutaways. Their hope would be to complete the assignment in one day,. after an initial survey of what could be shown. They had in mind a 15-20 minute segment. d. They expressed understanding for the fact that there is a severe limit to the areas that would be involved and that they would not be able to show something that hasn't been shown to other media that have worked in the building. About five different locations would be all ? they need. Approved For Release 2004/03/23 CIA-RDP80M00165AO02400130012-2 Approved For ease 2004/03/23: CIA-RDP80M0016 2400130012-2 -2- 3. I made the following points to them: NBC. a. b. They are, in fact, third in line--behind CBS and We would not want to expose the Agency to a frivolous treatment. c. We would have to have someone present during the processing of the film, and we would--have to have review rights to the raw film for security reasons. They agreed. d. I told them I could make no firm commitment at this point; that their proposal would be considered; and that, t any rate, fruition still would be some time off. 4. Observations: Their proposal was serious and sincere. . . They seemed willing to accommodate any restrictions we might impose. Overall impression was favorable. Herbert E. (404) 681-1950 Atlanta City Forum At your suggestion I am writing to follow up on our discussion-at lunch last Friday of the public affairs breakfast series we are establishing here under the name of the Atlanta City Forum. The Forum will be modelled after the one conducted by the City Club of Cleveland, a venerable institution-whose purposes and activities are well summarized in the enclosed pages from its yearbook. As you well know, downtown Atlanta has its clubs and associations which-gather periodically around common business and professional interests. There is no single place,'how ever, where all of its people, both the acknowledged and the soon-to-be leaders-, can go primarily.to recharge their in- tellectual batteries with fresh information and ideas on the political, economic and social issues of our time. The Atlanta City Club, located in the Equitable Building has agreed to lend its facilities for and sponsor a series of breakfasts dedicated to these purposes. Food. service will be quick and simple, with the speaker coming on at 8:15 a.m. and time reserved for questions from the floor. at his or her conclusion. All such sessions will be open to the public. ,We have a commitment from one prominent local radio station of technical assistance in taping the 'proceedings for expected rebroadcast as public affairs programming on Approved For Release 2004/03/23: CIA-RDP80MOO165AO02400130012-2 Approved F#elease 2004/03/23 : CIA-RDP80M00lOA002400130012-2 Mr. Stuart E. Eizenstat June 3, 1977 Page Two Re: Atlanta City Forum a number of stations in and beyond the metropolitan area. The Cleveland experience leads us to believe that the pro- grams will be widely used and that such guaranteed media exposure--combined with the quality of the audience--will enable us to continue to attract nationally prominent speak- ers without the payment of honoraria. The crucial rdient in this plan however is the guarantee of a truly big attraction for 'our firrsst program. A committee of Atlanta ub members and others, chaired by Bill Speer and including Richard Felker, current President of the Downtown Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, is ready to move immediately to recruit a blue-chip advisory board and to raise the funds which will be needed for expenses from Atlanta's major businesses and professional firms. The consensus of the group is that we need to be able to tell these backers that we have that first speaker lined up,, and that CIA Director Admiral Turner would be the most exciting figure we could presen , talking on a subject of universal interest, namely morality in international relations. We would like to kick the series off between the 12th.. , on any morning of the week except p-t and-the 30th of Se Monday, and preferably not Friday. If for any reason the Admiral--could not-make-it in September but would be willing to give us a-date in October or November, I am sure that we can proceed to build :a series on that basis. The Forum would provide the costs of his- transportation, meals, lodging, and the appropriate amenities. Having been_a membe-r of this community, you can appre- ciate what these. programs can add to the quality of life and, potentially the-quality of political dialogue in downtown Atlanta. Since Atlanta is the virtual hometown of this admin- istration we expect the Forum to have no trouble at all attracting personalities from the opposition, who it will of course have an obligation to invite. We hope the Administra- tion will see its way clear to help us by committing one of its major names to this project at the outset.. Our next. meeting will be at noon on Tuesday, June 2$; may we possibly have a response by then? HAMER 1951 YALE STATION, NEW HAVEN CONNECTICUT 06520 June 20, 1977 Admiral Stansfield Turner Central Intelligence Agency Washington, D.C. 20505 Dear Admiral Turner: Each year, the Political Union invites a small number of men and women in government, academics, journalism, and the arts to come to Yale to speak on the issues of the day. Recent guests have included Jimmy Earter, Ronald Reagan, Abba Eban, Gloria Steinem, Abraham Beame, John. Chancellor, and Daniel Ellsberg. We are now in the process of putting together our program for next fall, and would very much like you to come to Yale to address our members. The Political Union, as you may know, is the largest student organization at Yale. For almost 50 years now, it has provided its members a non-partisan forum for political discussion and debate. We would like to think that in a time of student apathy the Union is one of a very small number of campus organizations that continues to inspire interest in the political process and thought about the important issues of our time. Arrangements for guest speakers normally include a reception and dinner with Union members (and often members of the faculty), and then an address to the Union in the evening. We are more than willing, however, to adjust our format to accomodate your schedule. With regard to specific dates, almost any evening, Sunday through Thursday, from early September to mid-December,.will be convenient for us. We of course will reimburse you for your travel expenses as well as provide accomodations should you wish to spend the night in New Haven. Please feel free to call me.or to write me at the above address, if you have any questions about the Union. I can be reached this summer in Senator William Proxmire's office in Washington, and at 203-777-4343 after September 1. Thank you very much for your time., Respectfully yours, Vice-President DAVID G.
