DAZ was actually composed of two separate physical installattons located approximately 250 meters apartg the larger of whichiiss Zan(' 186# Each plant area was surrounded bye wall. Zavdd 186 was situeted at the southern end of'Rabochaya ulitsa and Zavod 192 was located at the western side'ofZavod 186. Sidewalks and streets were located on the northerng eastern g and southern sides of Zavod, 186. Zavod 192 was bounded on the west 1:7 a highway (name unknown) which led north to, the center of Dnepropetrovsk. At the western side of Uzi highway was an open field approximately one kilometer square. In coldest winter this field was a,lways devoid of snow and local residents wondered why snow melted as it touched the surface of 50X1-HUM thi area. 8. Zavod 186 50X1-HUM Zavod 186 main entrance was located on the east side of the plant facing Parkovaya ulitea. The entrance hs50X1-HUM double iron gates and it w used primarily as a vehicle entrance. A rsonnel entrance was located outh of Oe vehicle gate. there was an lammed entrance at the western side of the 50X1-HUM another personnel entrance on the north side, 50X1-HUM most plant workers got off the trolley at the streetcar stip at the end of Racal:Iva ulitsa and walked. westward- along the north side of the plant. Trucks also entered, plant grounds from a gate at the south side of the plant at a point Where the railroad entered. the factory grounds. 9* A barbed wire entanglement about one and One-half meters high was laid between the three-meter, brick perimeter wall of Zavod 186 and the sidewalk. Un au rized persons were not permitted, to enter the plant grounds. 50X1-HUM 10, a point west of Zavod 186, a large electrical transfoleser station (point 6, attachment) within the southern section of Zavod. 186. High tension wires led from the west to this installation. 50X1-HUM construction activity in this section which indicated. an enlargement fr of the electrical station was under progress. 11. Between this installation and. the wall, from one to three large, unpainted spherical meta tanks, approximately one and one-hat or two meters in diameter, each of which had. pipe attaagnents, gaugelike apparatus, and a vent protruding from its outer surface. Smoke or vapor c from the vents of these tanks,, and the area surrounding the vent was frosted. (See Sketch No, 4, Sketch of Spherical Tanks with Frosted Vents Observed at 50X1-HUM Zavod 186, page 110 50X1-HUM 12. these spherical tanks being transported to unknown 50X1-HUM destinations by green or red painted, two or three-ton trucks. nese trucks were driven from the etvecle gate of Zavod 186 along, the east and. north sides of the plant and, then traveled in a westwar5ox1 -HUM direction. These trucks were seen in areas north and, south of tow plant and they were also used to transport a3350X1-HUM dump loads of fresh dirt into the ravine east of Zavod 186, (See Point attachment.) ,See Sketch No. 5, Trucks Used to Transport Spherical Tanks froi Zavod Also Same Trucks Observed at Military Post Near DAZ, page 15.) The function of another chimney stack situated approxi- mately 200 meters west of the twin stacks was not known 50X1-HUM (See Sketches Eds. 2 and 3, pages 12 and 130) At a point near this single chimney stack a new building was being constructed, (Point 11, attachment). In 1 three brick walls ibout 10 meters bi-& bad been erected. no information concerning the purpose of this construction. 50X1-HUM 14. The railroad spur entering the plant area from the south led tc59X1 -HUM large dump area where a pile of scrap metal was located.. 15. Near the north mall was a large building which contained various shops (Point 14, attachment). I the plant administration offices were located in a three-or four-story building located in the northeast corner of theTlant grounds (Point 10 attach- ment). In 1957 a new four or five-story office building (Point 15, attacbnent) was being constructed at the southern end of Rdbochgya ulitsa outside of the Zavod 186 plant grounds. 50X1-HUM Zavod 192 16. Zavod 192 had one main entrance for personnel at the southern side of the factory, and a vehicle entrance located east of this gate. An 50X1-HUM unused entrance was located on the west side of the plant grounds, plant eloyees rode the streetcar to a point near the main gate on the east side of the railroad track which separated the two plant areas. TO reach the main entrance of Zavod 192, employees creased. a Small steel faatbridge conStred over the depression of the railroad bed. 50X1-HUM 17. From the .o clinic opposite the main entrance efiZaftd 194 a three-or four-story shop building0 the longer 50X1-HUM s c were three-gyarters the width of: the plant area. This building was approximately 650 meters lpng8 and it was 50X1-HUM higher than the polyclinic Mere were no tall chimneys visible a small, windowless building, approximately 3 x 4 x 4 meters in dimension located at the vest side of the plant area near the wall. This Arum building was apposite the unusual field previously described. in paragraph 7. Steam was ejected from a pipe about 20 centimeters in diameter and one and one-half meters long, which protruded from the ttn roof of this building. 18. In calm weather, two globes were sent up into 50X1-HUM the air frdn the southeast corner of Zairod 192 plant grounds. These . pale yellow globes appeared to be made of rubber; one of these balloon- like objects was spherical, the other elipscid in shape. Theglobes which were attached to two ropes were raised to a height of about 300 meters and remained motionless during the entire day. The security office Vaslodatodat the rear of the polyclinic, and southeast of the clinic there vas a tersonaal office. 50X1-HUM 21. 22. 50X1-HUM DAZ Plant Production I the DAZ activities were secret and no one mentioned What Was being manufactured... - when the plant'. was conterteditc50X1-HUM a 101 taw facto ry in 1953 or1954, all foreign-born employees were relocated in other non-sensitive �factory installations. The production of tractors at DAZ continued after this conversion, and tractors being driven from the east gate of Zarod I.86 at the rati5oki _Hum about 14 per 15-day period. The red-painted tractdis were approximately three meters long, and two meters high and had. large rear wheels with rubber tires, and small front Wheels with rubber tires. These tr�5-6-Turo were driven northward from the factory grounds, apparently in thE, direction of the main railroad station. At various tiMes during the' day - or evening in five to ten day intervals, beard "terrible noises resembling a hundred motors running". The noise50X1-HUM began suddenly and loudly, lasted approximately five minutes at the same intensity, and stopped abruptly. NO smoke or flame was noticed at the time of the noise which appeared to be coming from underground. The noise never occurred at night. The noise was so great that the vibrations shook the ground and rattled the windows of the hospital, polyclinics The noise was loudest at the polycli)50X1-HUM of the hospktals about 400 meters east of Zavod 186 (Point 38, attach- ment). This noise could also be beard in the city. 50X1-HUM Transportation DAZ was principally supplied With materials by 50X1-HUN means or railroad transportation. 50X1-HUN (See Sketch No. 1, page 11 .) On several occasions grey painted. freight care of an_apparently common type, but which were unusual, since they were doorless and were covered at the top with dark brown canvas. These freight cars were seen in the area of Zavod 186 and Zavod 192. (See Sketch No. 6, Freight Cara Observed in DAZ Plant Areas. An equilibrium test, referred to as a "high altitude test", which Conlisted of spinning -a person seated in a swivel chair and timing the person's abilitrto regain his equilibrium, was administered to vlant workers 4itery six swaths. 50X1-HUM Wor*rik4to had had. injuries to hands or feet were listed aS "flat for*Ork at high altitude". Hernia was often detected dUring these thorough said- _ annual examinations. a Soviet doctor, (f/nOMIEBEMYTAC, was personnel safety 50X1-HUM, officer, and was the only doctor permitted to enter the plant. There were several first-aid stations within the plant area 50X1-HUM no clinic facility within the plant grounds. 50X1-HUM Plant Security' In addition to the physical security installations previously described, military guards who carried side arms were stationed at the main entrance gates of Zavod 186 and Zavod 192. All vehicles and personnel entering and leaving the plant area were checked for documentation. 50X1-HUM At each corner 50X1-HUM of Zavod 186 there was a guard tower equipped with a telephone. Each of these towers was tanned by two guards who were armed with rifles with attached bayonets, or submachineguns. These guards wore khaki uniforms with red shoulder boards, and black, boots. Their khaki garrison bats bad red bands. The guards at the entrance gates wore plain khaki uniforms and overseas caps without piping. Guard officers wore the same khaki uniform with yellow shoulder bearda piped in red. There were ne auard 50X1-HUM towers within the plant grounds of Zavod 1923 the DAZ guards had quarters within the plant grounda. 50X1-HUM Power Facilities 36. (See paragraph 10.) In 1957 construction activity near the _previously described electric transformer station. no details concerning the size of the high 'tension wires entering the plant grounds, the nudber of insulators, or the voltage, utilized at the plant. 37. Civil Defense that all new buildings around the Avtopsyod bad basement areas which were designated as air-raid shelters. 38. The polyclinic constructed in 1956 Which served &mod 186 (Point 38 y attachment) had an air-raid shelter area construCted below_the ground floor of the building. The pkersio-therapy section of the polyclinic was located in a section of this basement area. The floor space of the physio-tberapy section was aouroxitatelv 10 x 40 metal* dimension. However, all hospital personnel were obligated to assemble at the polyclinic at the sound of a pre ranged alailm Those off duty were called by telephone. It took twenty minutes for all personnel to assemble. Military Units Observed Near DM 50X1-HUM 50X1-HUM 50X1-HUM 50X1-HUM there was a military post located on Rabochaga ulitsa,� north of the Avtozairod. (See Point 60� 50X1-HUM attachment). a out five large air-raid searchlights and artillery pieces which were anti-aircraft guns. ' Dnepropetrovsk, pages19 and, 20,, respectively.) I maw, military trucks within the compound and several_barracks. Lthe soldiers uniforms had artillery insignia. These shoulder this was an artillery unit because the shoulder boards of boards bad a dark or black background with red piping. The khaki garrison cap was piped in red and had a black visor. These soldiers more either khaki trousers with red piping, or blue trousers with red piping, a beltless khaki jacket, and black. boots. Theofficers wore yellow shoulder boards with red pining.
