The growing menace of Communist totalitarianism has posed
the problem of cultural freedom in sharp relief. But opposition
to communism by itself is not only an inadequate but a decep-
tive qualification for the supporter of cultural freedom. Oppo-
sition to communism springs sometimes because of an opposition
to materialism sometimes because of an opposition to its profes-
