Experiments were performed on the effect of sunlight
and diffuse daylight on sus-
pended and lyophilized BCG vaccine to investigate
the behaviour of vaccine sus-
pensions under natural lighting conditions. When a
suspension containing 40 mg./ml.
and enclosed in colourless transparent glass phials
is exposed for 5 hr. to direct
sunlight during the summer months, a slow decrease
in the number of living
bacilli takes place. When the same vaccine Is
exposed to diffuse daylight for 7
days.this decrease agrees fully with that of vaccine
kept in the dark. Only after
7-14 days does diffuse daylight become a damaging
factor. When Iyophilized vac-
cine in exposed to sunlight for hours during the
summer months, or to the quartz
lamp for 11 hr., or to diffuse daylight for 30 days.
no decrease in the number of
living bacilli takes place. (IV, 15)

Title - The Organization of Economy in Forests Situated in
Basins
of Rivers Inportant for Water-Power Production.
Abstract; The problems o'L economy management in forests of
24 basins of rivers important for watex-power pro-
duction are studiod, The mothos of main tree fel-
lings and the volume of felled stock are indica-
ted; the thinning rate is determined, Only fel-
lings for sanitary purposes arc planned on slopes
stueper than 450. The results of studies conduc-
ted in thc~ upper part of the basin of the rivor
Ardzbesh are given. -_ A. Yana

results
In 1956, the TsNIIYLF carried out a series of tests to deter-
mine the effect of a multipurpose additive on highaulfur
content fuels. The results of the experiments are shown in
tables 1-5. It was found that the additive reduces the scale
deposits on the cylinder and piston heads (in this case by
20-40%) and thereby reduces wear on the cylinder-piston as-
sembly. The crank-ease oil deteriorates more slowly. The
additive had no great-effect on the ignitability of the fuel
in a high-speed diesel.but was conductive to fuller combus-
tion. Because of its ready solubility, it requires no spe-
cial mixingtechnique but can simply be added when the tank
is being filled up. There are 5 tables and 2 graphs.

TITLE; Vanadium Corrosion of Diesel Engine Parts
PERIODICAL: Promyshlennaya energetika, 1961, No. 4, pp. 25-27
TEXT: When diesel engines operate on high-sulphur fuel
corrosive wear is attributed to sulphur compounds. In fact
vanadium compounds which are present in almost all residual fuels
contribute to the corrosion. Soviet technical literature has paid
considerable attention to vanadium corrosion of gas turbine parts
but has little to say of diesels. This is probably because few
diesels operate on residual fuel and most slow speed marine engines
use Baku fuel of low sulphur content. However, the situation will
change and high sulphur fuels will be used. Foreign experience
shows that vanadium compounds in the fuel-cause corrosive wear of
injection jets, combustion chambers pistons and valves. German and
English experience of this kind is then described. The present
author has also observed Vanadium corrosion on the exhaust valves
and seatings of a diesel Type 4r17.5/24 during the testing of anti-
sulphur-additives in engine fuel which contained 2.69/p sulphur and

some vanadium. Although the anti-sulphur additive was very
effective in reducing many kinds of wear due to sulphur, after 50
hours operation exhaust valve corrosion was experienced. It was
attributed to vanadium. A chemical mechanism of vanadium corrosion
is suggested. One of the reactions that can occur in the presence
of sulphur in the fuel is: V204 + 2SO2 + 0 -0-2VOS04, which is
followed by the decomposition: 2VOS04-+ V265 + 02 + 303, Combus-
tion products containing sulphur are of high dew point and so the
00 forms sulphuric acid in low temperature zones of 'he engine.
~~g corrosion is much more severe than gas corrosion d*ue to S02-
In addition, there is of course the direct vanadium corrosion:
Fe + V205--w FeO + V204. Most metallic alloys, ferrous and nickel,
are subject to this corrosion and resistance to it depends mainly
on the presence of a surface layer containing chromium. Any
abrasive wear of this surface layer is followed by vanadium
corrosion. Vanadium corrosion may be reduced by adding MgO or ZnO
to the fuel but the amount of additive to be used is not stated.-
Compounds of vanadium and sodium also present danger of corrosion.

Vanadium Corrosion of Diesel Engine Parts
Fuel oil additives now being developed are mainly intended to
prevent sulphur corrosion but obviously they should also be
designed to reduce corrosion by vanadium pentoxide. There are
3 figures and 5 references: 1 Soviet and 4 non-Soviet.

TITLE; Additives to fuels - effective means of increasing
motor resources of power plants
PERIODICAL: Energomashinostroyeniye, no.6, 1962, 26-28
TS'XT: In 1957 the first multifunctional fuel additives
manufactured by VNII NP (Professor N.A. Butkov's laboratory) were
introduced to protect diesel engines from the corrosive action of
sulphur compounds in liquid and gaseous phases. Additive
-.ol.A Hn-102 (VN11 NP-102) was designed for boiler fuels,
:4 -111 (VN11 NP-111) for- diesel fuels, and Bhml HF1 -101
(VN11 NP-101) for motor fuels). The raw materi'als for the
manufacture of the additives are: gas oil from catalytic cracking,
metal naphthenates, tricresylphosphate, nitrobenzene,
orthodichlorobenzene and lanolin. The nature of the additives
is as follows: VNII-NP-102, homologues of naphthalene;
VNII NP-101, Cu, Ba, P; and VNII NP-111, P, Zn, C1. The
concentrations of the additives used in the fuels are 0.2, 0-3-:0-5,
and 0-7-0.8% respectively. Testing of the additive VNII NP-102

Additives to fuels - effective ... E075/E136
in marine boiler plants and in locomotives, using boiler fuels
with up to,3-%~ S, gave a 35-60~~ decrease in deposit formation.
The deposits become less tacky and more detachable from the
surfaces. The coking of fuel injectors was also lowered. The
additive prevents the formation of sludge in fuel storage tanks
and disperses any existing sludge. Additive VNII NP?-101 gave
similar results with the motor fuels and was also effective for
diesel fuels where ;6t decreased ring-liner wear by 30%. The'
additive (L'O') reduced the mercaptan content of the fuel from
0.21-
to 0.005",5. It noticeably promoted complete combustion of the
fuel, giving an increase in C02 and decrease of smoke in the
exhaust gases. Additive VNII NP-111 did not-appreciably reduce
the wear of piston rings, but it reduced liner wear (11-6%~O) and
deposit formation. The additive was improved by the addition of
barium naphthenate which gave 6-405yo reduction in the top-ring
,wear. The main difficulty in the use of the additives is that
they
are not easy to dissolve in the fuels. They also'tend to
precipitate after more than 30 days' storage.
