The use of the "ionization colorixeter" which comprises a large rpimber of ionization chambers male it possible to investigate the interaction of part- icles of known energy. 2. Studies carried ou-t in 1957 at 3MO m above sea level and in 1958-59 at 32LO m above sea level have produced results that are inmod arreement. From these results, the following conclusions may be drawn: a) when interactine with Fe nuclei,, 10 /'- lolaev particles lose, as a rule, nearly all their enerFy in the production of mesonsi b) there is a large probability that as a result of collision with a nucleus there are produced a small number of partioles, the total enerf7y of whJch amounts to-50A of the energy of the pr1mary particle (in the majority of cases the@e particles are not xrocleons): a) big fluctuations are observed in energy transfer to',1 -mesons. TITLE: Preliminary Results of an Investigation of the Underground Variations of Cosmic Rays PERIODICAL: V ab.: Varlatsii kosmIch. luchey pod zemley, na urovne morya I v stratoofere. No. 1, Moscow, AN SSSR,1959, pp. 37-47 Vl< TFAT: The variations of the cosmic ray intensity are investigated on the basis of data obtained from a counter telescope of triple coincidences, which was Iccated under the earth's surface at the depth of 40 m of water equivalent. By the s imple- correlation method the value of the barometric coefficient A. (o.o2i + 0.008) %/.-4b was obtained. The diurnal variation of the underground intensity @unounts to about 0.05%. By averaging the data it Is shown that the average effect at the depth of 40 m of water equivalent amounts to 0.3% durIng 11 events or decreases of the Forbush type. The investigation of the disturbed diurnal varia- tions in the cosmic ray Intensity was also carried out. N. X. Translator's note: This is the full translation of the original Russian abstract. TITLE: Fro*-Space Measurement of Small Samples of Dielectric Haterials.9t Doeimetre Vav*lengths PERIODICALt Priboryf'i tekhaika okeperimenta, 1960, No 3, pp 109-114 ABSTRACTt At wavelength* of 10 cm and above waveguide methods and conventional free space methods for measuring reflection and transmission coefficients become awkward, By usin3 nd-fire radiators instead of lenses and reflectors a ignificant reduction in size can be effected and samples : may be measured whose dimensions are comparable with the wavelength employed. Fig I shows a number of rod aerials, covering the range 3 - 50 cm. Their use has led to the following conclusions4 1) with a sufficiently slow surface wave almost all the electromagnetic energy in concentrated near the surface within a sheath whose cUameter in comparable with the wavelength; 2) the 'effective aperture' of the aerial depends only on the Card IA extent to which the surface wave is slowed down and _81995- S/12o/60/000/03/032/055 E041/9521 Free-Space Measurement of Small Samples of Dielectric Materials at Decimetre Wavelength* adjustment of the beats shape is controlled either by altering the material of the rod or fixing a modifying ---is -prectically--plane-and-this-.-onables -samples - --- ----- brought close-to it-and to reduce sensitivity to-external disturbances; 4) & dielectric aerial can be matched to free space such that a wave falling on it does so without reflection; 5) an end-fire aerial enables the use of a new device for indicating a reflected signal - the surface-wave directional coupler (Ref 4).
