ABSTRACTt -,The present paper investigates the angular distribution of
neutral pione formed in proton-proton collisions within the
range of 460-665-Mov. The paper goes into many details and first
discusses the results mentioned in numerous publications dealing
with this subjeot,'and deals with the'problems connected with
the investigations described. Pion angulLr distribution is de-
termined by,means of the angular distribution ofX.-quanta
(decay XO -~ 21); the latter is less anisotropic, than the-an-
gular is ribu ion of pions, and with decreasing pion velocity
the, ahisotropy vanishes rapidly (exponential decreaset see
figure 1). The investigations were carriedout with an unpolari-
zed proton beam on the six-meter phasotron of the OIYaI. The
-4mental-arrahgement is shown b;7 figure 2; proton energy

apparatus-in detail. Figura 4 shows a scheme of the 1-telescope
system, the degree of efficiency of which is shown by figure

container made from foam polystyrone as well as polyethylene
and graphite (for cross section measurement) (dia-meter 8 am,,
length 25 am) was used as a target 6 The mo8t favorable recording

having hydrogen nuclei bombarded with neutrons.or by experimentally comparing
the cross sections of reaction (3) p + d -;, Iro + nucleons, -v, ith those of re-

of measurement had already been discussed in a previous paper (Ref. 11). Bom-
barding was made with an unpolarized, proton beam of the six-meter synchro-

TEXT! The rare decay mode 1t+ -4 n0 + e+ + V is termed 6-decay of the
pion. Theoretical treatment similar to the Fermi treatment of nuclei has
shown that the /1-decay probability of a pion is only about 10-8 of the
probability of the usual muon decay 7r- + 9 (Ya. B. Zelldovich
DAN SSSR, 91, 421, 1954). One can calculate exactly the probability or
that A-decay without regard to strongly interacting particles if the
hypothesis of the conservation of the vector current in the theory of
universal weak interaction is rigtht

TEXT: The charge exchange.of % mesons stopped in polyethylene was
investigated using a device rith high time resolution.(A. F. Dunaytsev
et al., ZhETF, 42, 632, 1962). *The device allowed ~o mesons to be
recorded more efficiently than had been possible in previous investiga-
tions. A 75-VLev n- meson beam (Fig.) passes through a set of scintilla-
tion counters and moderating filters and is stopped in a target (poly-
ethylene, liquid hydrogen). The I-quanta produced during the decay of
n0 mesons emitted by the stop of n- mesons are recorded by Cherenkov
spet, trometers. After preliminary experiments with a target of liquid
hydrogen the H target 'was replaced by a polyethylene target. The

coincidence counting rate remained two orders of magnitude above the
background level. Vnen'the target was taken out of the beam, the count
rate dropped to 1/300. The y-quanta recorded possessed an energy of
70 Mev. In both spectrometers, the I-quanta were producedgimultaneouslys:
The effect observed was caused by the stop of n- mesons. When the energy
of the n- mesons was reduced to 65 Mevo the count rate dropped to 1/15-
With the use of a graphite targetp the count rate reached only 1/50 of
that obtained with a poUethylene target. There is I figure.

strumental tr urna of the oesophagus (Russian text)
VESTN. OTO-RINO-LARING. 1957, 2 (22-25)
Seven cases of perforations -of the oesophagus caused by surgical instruments are
reported. In all cases purulent mediastinitis developed., Surgical intervention
(mediastinotorny) was performed on five patients; four of them recovered. The
author believes that if the middle"part of the thoracic portion of the oeuophagus is
injured. collar mediastinotomy will cure mediastinitis. This operation is beut
tolerated by the patient and technically is most convenient for the surgeon. Only
when the supradiaphragmatic portion of the oesophagus is perforated will trans-
diaphragmatic mediastinotomy be more convenient. 9*1

TITLE: The Study of the Lb_-_Q)~ System by the Method of Thermography
.2
PERIODICAL: Nauk. zap. Chernivetsfk. un-t, 1958, Vol 34, PP 103-106 (Ukrainian)
ABSTRACT: The thermographic investigation of Pb02,,Pb304 and PbO has bee 'n carried out.
The thermograms were made in a nitrogen atmosphere. The thermogram of PbO
of the rh6mbic modification has an endothermal effect at 48o - 49ooc per-
taining to the transition into the tetragonal form. On the thermogram of
PbO of tetragonal modification this transition is not observed. The thermo-
gram of Fb 304 has 2 endothernal effects: the dehydration at 1000C and the
formation of the rhombic modification of PbO at 6200C. The themogram of
PbO. has 3 endothermal effects: the loss.cf water ( -1000C), the forma-
tion of Pb394 ( -4000C) and the formation of PbO ( --6200C).
