TITLE: Investigation of the counter corona 5/0057/04/034/00G/1511/152i SOURCE: Zhurnal teldiniches1coy fizilci, v.34, no.8, 1964, 1511-1Z20 TOPIC TAGS; electric corona, corona discharGe, electric dischar.-o, space charge ADSMACT: By "counter corona" is understood the rap1d neutralization oze the excess space charge in a corona discharge when the electrode potential is suddenly do- creased. This phenomenonwas investigated experimentally. Coaxial cylindrical olec- troelos were employed; the ratio of the diameter of the inner electrode to that of the outer was either 0.02 or 0.06, and the outer electrode was cithor 50 or 100 cm in both diameter and length. Guard electrodes were employed to avoid end effects. Both positive and negative coronas were excited with a high-voltage pulse gancraVor, and potential cut-off was effocted by means of a short circuiting spar% gap. By ad- justing circuit parameters, the potential could be made to fall apariodically or to osc~llato with dooronsing amplitude, and the out-off time could 'bo varied from 0.2 to 50 microsec. The potential of the electrode and the currant into it were observcd .Card 1/3 ACCESSION Nil: AP4042942 with oscilloscopes. The current duo =rely to the capacity of the electrodes selves was compensated, and an oscilloscope displny of charge versus :~lcctrodc po- tential was achieved by integrating the remaining current. The corona and counter corona were also observed optically with an electron optical image converter equip- pod for time scanning. The results of the measurements are discussed in consider- able detail, and they are compared with calculations based on greatlysimplifiad models. The assumption which is sometimes made that the excess space charge of the corona is concentrated near a cylindrical surface within which, tho field essential- ly vanishes led to results in sharp disagreement with the observations. Better ag- reemant was obtained with the assumption that the excess space charge is uniformly distributed throughout a cylindrical region. A counter corona was most marRed in the case of a negative corona in which the voltage was considerably in excess of that required to initiate a corona discharge. In this case up to CO"do of tho space charge %vas neutralized. Charge neutralization procooded simultaneously with the voll- tage drop: the more rapidly the voltage was cut off, the more intense was the coun- ter corona. The development of a counter corona led to an increase of the of-fectivo capacity of the electrodes, just as does the development of a corona'.
