TEXT: The authors derive a formula enabling one to determine attenuation
of low-frequency sonic waves in air duets lined with standard sowed-absorbing
materials; method and results of testing are described, The attenuation ~ormula
in decibells per length unit looks as follows: Q L1 ~ 8.6 (~: f/c) (d/bl~ ),
where f is frequency, a is sound velocity, b is the real and d is the imagiy~ary
~partrof the reduced impedance of the absorbing layer, obtained b;~ ealeulat;Lon or
experimentally. An experimental testing of the theoretical formula was carp^ied
cut by direct measuring of attenuation in a rectangular duet one of whose w~~11s
was lined with eaprone cotton wool, stitched mats made of cotton "anipir~ro~rannyy"
and gravel layer. The values of the real_and imaginSry parts-of :reduced impe-
dance of th.e aorbing layer were obtained. with an interferometer and agreed witYi

ABSTRACTs In enclosed seas, where deep currents are c~npecratively weak, a shaz~p
diacontixiuity in the vertical distribution of temperature occurs in
aum~er and autumn. A transition layer, called the discontinuity 7.isycjr,
separates the upper and lower portions whi~~h differ in their denai'~y
teoapera, ture and acoustic refract3.v indcix. Tf this transition :layer is
plane and horizontal, then its effect on prt>pagation of sound in seas
. reduces to certain anomalies in refracted graves . If the tran~~ition
layer is disturbed, i.e, when gravitational waves ar propagated a],ox`g 3.t,
then sound is scattered as we11 as refra ctet'd . 1'he present pa per gives
an approximate calculation of such ec~xttering assuming random n~cture
of the gravitational waves in the transition layer. `the scatterixs~,
