ABSTRACT An ~nvest~gation Is made of the deformabilit~y of alloys of
low ductility and of the character of metal flow; whe~r; they are
upset in retainers of various wall thicknesses, and the hydra
static pressure on the specimen due tc; the retainer ~s deter-
mined. The specimens were made of AMg-7, ArIAL, and I~1A3
alloys. It is established that the use of retame:rs m,3de of dui -
tile materials of adequate strength me reases the deformation
of billets of low ductility. It is possible to deduce the ratio of
retainer pressure upon the specimen from the I~tart:ing dimen-
sions and the degref~ of deformation. A considerable uneven
ness of deformation Is observed in uptietting. 'l'he upsett~nl; of
a speo~men without ,~ retainer results In tensile radial and
tangential stresses.
