TEXT: pneumatic regulator elements produced by an industrial
automation firm in Prague-are described. The output variable of the
pneumatic regulator can, with increasing input va~?iable, either in-
crease or decrease, as desired. The pneumatic regulator has a pro-
portional and an integrating element (PI-regulator). The control
unit contains, in addition to the pneumatic regulator, a pickup
unit with remote control, and two manometers. Examples for tlie a-p-

A Quick-acting Ring Counter

Among the possible schemes for the discrete counting of pulses
the ring counters are of great interest, and figure 1 shows a
principle scheme of such a ring counter. The inclination to
malfunction of this scheme is pointed out, and it is found that
by an increase of the number of tubes a decrease of the potential
differences at the grids of the tubes occurs. In this way ring
counters with more than six steps become very uncertain. In
trigger-ring-~counters this phenomenon does not occur with an
increase of the number of tubes; such a trigger-ring-counter is
shown by figure 2. In these schemes the grids are adjacent to
voltage dividers and the grid voltage is independent of the
number of steps. Figure 4 shows the voltage variations at the
anodes and the grids of the tubes after which the system of
equations (1) for the calculation of the scheme at static
operation in given. As the circuit under investigation is one
with double triodes, the second trigger serves as a basis and the

case is investigated in which the left side of this trigger is
open and the right is closed. For this case the anode voltages
are given by the equations (4) and (5)- For the analo ous reversed
case the anode voltages are given by the equations (65 and (7).
Noxtt the grid voltages are derived: equations (8) and (11). Tne
two conditions for the exact operation of the scheme are then
given: The inequalities (12) and (13). From the formulas thus
obtained formula (15) is finally developed for the grid voltage
of the right side mid the inequality (16) is given. The voltage
difference at the grids is calculated by means of formula (17).
In the last part of the present paper the permissible error limits
of the elements used in this circuit are evaluated, and formulas
(27) and (28) are developed for the determination of the
permissible error limits. In conclusion, calculation of an
example is carried out. There are 4 figures and 3 references,
2 of which are Soviet.

Abstract : Tritium has a number of advantages over D and C14 as a
tracer: a higher activity, ease of introduction into
molecules, low cost. Its drawback consists in the radi-
oactive decoizpcsition of tritiun-tagged compounds. For
purposes of analysis the conpounds ccntaining T are con-
verted to a mixture Of CH4 and H , the activity of which
is measured in an ionization chager. The tritium-tagged

compounds are prepared by reduction with the hydrides

organic molecules. Data are presented on the activa-
ting effect of various groups, maximum specific activi-
ties, etc. Tritium-tagged inuthyl groups were used in the
methylation of hydrocarbons for the purpose of investiga-
ting their structure. A series of data are presented on
the fractionation of the T and H isotopes by partition
chromatography and on the effect of the isotope corposi-
tion of hydrogeii on, the rate of soi-.ie reactions.

ABSTRACT: In the case of deter..iination of the hardness by static
methods there is the folloviing dependence beti,,een the
indentation force P and the diameter of the indentation
d: P = ad", where a and n are constants of the metal
of which a depends on the diameter of the ball$ whilst
n does not depend on the ball dianeter and varies
between 2 and 2.5. AccordinE to Klassj(Ref 2) and
Edwards and Willis (Ref 3), the exponential relation is
also valid for the case of impact indentation of a ball
but -the numerical vulue of n Is considerably smciller
durinU impact. Shevandin (Ref 11.) found that the value

ABSTRACT: A bending of the sample in torsional strength tests can occur
by the non-coincidence of the axon of revolution of the
active and passive holding device as well as by a dis-
placement of the disks betwean axea of the holding devices
with respect to the axis of revolution; in this connection
those cases are of interest in which the amount of bending
does not depend on the angle of rotation of the sample. If
the axis of the sample coincides with the axis of rotation
the torsional moment along the sample is constant, if not
it changes according to the length of the sample. In solving
the problem of the bending of the sample, an expression can
be obtained for the calculation of the reactive forces R and

ing (a - angle of rotation of the axis of rotation of the
holding device, or the angle characterizing the rotation of
the disks between the axes of the holding devices with re-
spect to the axis of rotation; 6 - the displacement of the
axes of rotation of the holding devices with respect to each
other, or the displacement of the disks between the axes of
the holding devices). Mathematical derivations as well as
graphical representations and a table for various:character-
istics of the bending are given. The measuring technique
shows among other things that the samples were tested an
MK-25 machines (built by the Rostov/Don Institute of Rail-
road-Transport Engineers) with ordinary holding devices as
well as with holding devices which had a hinge of the Guk
type, and that thus bending of the-sample was prevented. In
order to be able to classify the magnitudes of the bending
of the sample in ordinary holding devices a special method
was worked out by using a Gugenberg tensometer. The experi-
mental results obtained showed that the possible bending in
torsional tests may lead to remarkable errors in some cases;
this can be reduced considerably in the machines mentioned

TEXTs The authors give results of laboratory tests for producing poly-
isobutylene (I) of molecular weight 3500 - 13,800 usable as a condensing
additive for lubricants. The tests were conducted on the desulfurized
fraction (DF) with boiling point -7 to +4-50C produced by rectification
and desulfurization (passing through solid KOH) from the works butane-
butylene fraction in 87% by weight yield. The DF contained (% by weight):
0.3 C3 hydrocarbons; 16.1 iso-C4H8 ; 25.5 n-C4 Ho 57.7 C4 H10% and 0.4
hydrocarbons C5 +. Polymerization tests were conducted at -15 to -500C

during 2 - 5 hr inthe preaence of an AM 3 catalyst. The polymerization
product was treated with alcohol to decompose the A101Y The light com-
ponents with boiling points up to 100 - 110OC/io mm Hg were distilled off.
The samples of I obtained corresponded to the tentative technical specifi.-
cations. The highest yield of 1 (12.0 by weight of DF, or 84% of iso-
C4H.) was obtained by 3 hr polymerization at -150C. No depolymerization V~
of I occurred when 5% solutions of I in "A" ("L") turbine oil were heated

the preparative zonal eleetrophoresis at tIe constant
value of pH, in which are combined the advantages of a
3-chamber Svenson's appliance with those electraphoreti-

fier with a regulated voltage of 0-10,000 v serves as a
source of tension.

'When Streptolysin 0 was injected intra-
muscularly into cats, no changes in their be-
havior were noted. When 0.1--0.5 ml of it was
injected Into the ventricular system through a
trephined orifice, within 3 to 4 minutes the
first signs of its action were noted--mewing at
regular intervals, licking and profuse saliva-
tion. Pronounced nystagmus was seen among some
of the animals. Subsequently there was a change
in the activity of-the motor apparatus: the
muscular tonus of the extensors of the anterior
extremities and the musclasof the head was seen

got worse and it died. The histological changes
caused by streptolysin 0 are under study and
comprise the subject matter of a separate paper.
