ABSTRACT: The existence of anhydrous parrhenates has not been previously estab-
l1shed. This article ieports a method of preparation of anhy&=x perrhenates of
the rare earth elements by dehydration cf tbtir lowar crystmUohydrates. Tb--
obtained perrhenates of yttri=, lanthu= wald lanthhaoids are soluble in water in
considerable proportions and tWLs the described synthesis can utilize the starting
materials more effectively with a product yield of 95%. Mis synthesized perrhen-
ates contain a minlow amount of water of crystallization. The rar-,% earth per-
rhenates obtained at 75430C are no-n-hygrosacpic, fire crystalf. which readily dis-
eolve in water, alcohol and are-tone, aad aa-, stable bet-4a--n ths temperature inter-

ABSTRACT: The authors investigated crystals of tetrahydrates of
perrhenate of lanthanum, lantbanolda, and yttrium, the production and[
chemical analysis of which were described in an earlier paper (Dokl.-
AN SSSR.v. 158, .664, 1964). A schematic study of the single crysta:tsl_
in x-ray cameras and-with.a diffractometer has shown that these sub-

PERIODICAL: Svarochnoye Proizvodstvo, 1959, Nr 6, pp 34-36 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The author discusses a new method of gas-cuttin,,t by
air-water-cooling which proves the possibility of cut-
ting single parts without defonnatiou. G. 1. Matskcvich
participated in the experirmrt . The new method is an
-water-cooling of the cutting edge while cutting by
two concentric currents - condensed air within, and
water on the outside - around the cutter-flame. Figure
1 shows a special cutter GRUD-51 constructed by the
author to apply the new rrethod. Figure 2 gives tech-
nical description of the new cutter. The author dis-
cusses his experience in welding St 3 and S Ch L steel,
(Table 1). The sizes of distortion in cuttin- GRUD-51
are given in table 2. The authors state that the appli-
cation of the GRUD-51 cutter is especially efticient
for narrow single parts of complicated configuration.

TOPIC TAGSt irRn,,,Armco iron, U10 steel, steel, Curie point of cementites cem ent-

annealing
ABSTRACT: A series of magnetometric investigations of annealed and mechanically
hardened carbon steel were carried out in order to determine the deformation effect.
on the position of the Curie point of comentite. Some of the g~mples were hold
at 300, hOO., 5D0 and 6,15G for one hour in order to study the position of the Curie
point during this processe The samplGs consisted of Armco iron and of steel U10.
They were heated to 75CG, hold for hours at 710G. and were then cooled in the
oven. Some of the sanples underwent uniaxial compression (75% of deformation)*
The curves showing the relation of the saturation magnetization to temperature
were recorded -(during a continuous heating of samples) by an Akulov ardsometer in
the field intensities of V7r x 3.06 a/m 8~d 5A7T 106 a/M (the results obtained

:at both intensities were identical), It uas established that the Curie ncoint of
cementite in the deformed steel samples occuiTed at higher terperatures ~260-2700)
..than in the nondeformed annealed steel,.' During heating (which removed the plastic
-deformation effect) the Curie point moved to its normal position at 210C, Tile
authors state that no definite conclusion concerning this effect can be made yet
because of insufficieiit experimental data, They believe., however,, that the dis-
placement of the Curio point in-the,course of deformation was not related to the
transformation of cemontite into another carbide* Origg arts has, 3 figures# i

TITLE: Results of the International,Symposium on Leptospiroses
PERIODICALs Zhurnal mikrobiologii, epidemiologii i immunobiologii, 1959,'(,:~1-3v
Nr 9, pp 153-155 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The Syuiposium was held in Lublin, Poland, from 5 - 5 December
1958 and was devoted to the problem of leptospiroses in man and
animals. It was organized by the State Institute for Rural Pro-
feSBional Medicine and Rural Hygiene under the direct sponsor-
ship of' the Polish Academy of Sciences. The following dele ateB
attended: Professors Parnas, iviet;;, TaszYAak:L, , - DEjbrowskil
(Poland); Professor Fatie, and Doctor Mochmann (East Germany);
Doctor Kmet (6SR); Professors Varfolomeyeva and Lyubashenko
(USSR); Doctor A_ZY. (Hungary). The Symposium heard 30 papers,
divided into 5 sessions. Parnas and his colleagues spoke on the
morphological details of 27 serological types of leptospires.
The results showed that the length and breadth of the body and
the number of spirals in leptospires vary according to their spe-

conglomerates are forming and in older strains spherical gra-
nules. The latter consist of.a 'n'accumulation of nucleopro-
teids. Extracellular forms fulfil the function of stages of lep-
tospire growth. Kmet' studied the antigenic mechanism of L.
y
australis A, using the factorial investigation of serotypes.
Kate described the occupational incidence of leptospiroses in
East Germany. Tus z73~ski used recent records on leptospirosis
in Poland to characterize the leptospirosis syndrome. Nlochmann
dealt with the question of complications which develop after
leptospirosis. Varfolomeyeva dealt with the etiology of lepto-
spiroses in the USSR, their specific prophylaxis and therapy
with specific gamma-globulins and also demonstrated a universal
laboratory model (baby rabbits) for reproducing leptospirosis.
Lyubashenko gave an expose' of contemporary data on the epizooto-
logy, etiology, prophylaxis and treatment of leptospirosis amon.-
domestio animals. The Symposium called for more symposia along
the same linea. Work should be intensified on the clasoifica-
tion of new strains. The International Bacteriological Code

and improvement of sanitary conditions will help to counter
leptosrirosis. The vaccination of domestic animals is recommen-
ded, but work still remains to be done on the method. The Sym-
posium commended the USSR's method of treating leptospirosis pa-
tients with gamma-globulins.

ABSTRACT: Investigations discussed here were carried out with spherical
stilbene crystals. For the purpose of stimulating the luminescence
in the center., the sphezes were intersected in diagonal plahes.
with a certain direction. The polarization diagrams vere taken by
a polarization-gonicmetric apparatus. First the dependence of
polarization on the torsion angle of the crystal (round a horizontal
axis) vas measured at each hemisphere and then the positions qf the
crystal with such orientation was ascertained at vhich the polariza-
tion has the ma3dmum positive or the waxim- negative value. Me
stilbene monocrystals serving for the production of the sainples vere
raisedin soldered test-tubes according to the method of Obreiwv-

optical axes. 37 - square with the bisector of the acute angle
between the cptical axes. III - square with the bisector of the
obtuse angle between the optical axes. Then something is said on
the theoretical computation of the azi-thal dependences and of the
polarization diagrams of the luminescence. Then a sketch illustrates
the ccuputed positive and negative polarization diagrams for all of
the three sections mentioned above. A second sketch contains the
corresponding diagrams that have been measured by experl nt. There
is a gcod conformity qualitative of the corresponding diagrams. Be-
cause of this good qualitative conformity the determination of-the
orienteition of the molecules in the crystal lattices of thepolariza-
tion of the lvminescence can be considered. That is a new method
for the determination of the structure of the crystU is obtained
thereby. But the theoretical and experimental curves do not corres-

ABST,LWT: In contrast to polarization in isotropic solutions, polarization of
fluorescence of A-aolacular crystals does not depend on anisotropy of
excitation. The only spatial dependence of polarization in molacular
crystals is the dependence on the angle betneen the direction of
absorption and soma othir fixed direction. The graphical repraientition.

crystallographic planes and the plane of the cut -mas covered vith a
diaphragm so that only a sLiall area of 1-2 mm diametar was excitad
at the contra of the sphere. The spheras theasqlves wera frow 5 to

Crystals
Polarization diagrams wor3 obtained using w3paralms based on a
gonlometsr and a Corna polarimetar. Luminescence was excited using
the 365 w~L Hg line. The hetaisph,)rical sanplas 7,ora prapared from
atilbene and tolane monocrystals. The directions of tho optical axes
vvire fcund by th,?j iiiathod daucribed by Shubnikov (Ref 2) and these
directions were usorl to prop%ra tho swaplau in uuch a vi~ty that the
hei'aispharas Yjar,3 cut along ona of the following planos. ~1) the
plane of the optical axes, (2) the plane nonnal to tha bisector of tho
acute angle between the optical axes, and (3) at right-angles to the
bisector of the obtuse angle between tho optical axes - Fi.-ra I and 7
show the coordinates used in c%lculation of polarization diagmas
(Fir, 1) and depolarization by tharmal vibrations (Fi- 7). Figs 2 and 3
give tae calculatad polarization diagrams for stilbene and tolane
raupectively. Figs 4 aud 5 give the experimental polarization diagra,is
for stilbene and tolane respectively. Fig 6 gives tha polarization
diagrams calculated for t1ha case of at, oscillator orien-zed along the

was also Laeasurod for certain othar c:ystals such as ant, hracene which
contained somo naphthacene (Fig 8), 1,10-dibromoanthracone and
3-dLaothylwaino-6-aminophl~haliraide at room teaperature, and at the
temp9rature of liqaid nitrogen. Wizhin the axpariiaental error
polarization is the same at both temparatures. Analysis of all the
polaritation diagrains shows that both localized and free excitons take
part in the process of luminescence. The ralative Intensity and
polarization for free excitons was obtained for anthracene, which
contained naphthacene (Fig 9). Ther,3 are 9 fi,!ur-3s qrd 16 r3farances,
9 of which are Sovier,.
