TEXT: The present article shows that the -ign of the firz't arrival of a
longitudinal explosion wave will remain positive even if the center of ex-
pansion is located near or on the interface of the elastic constants and
that the waves arriving first, are of a considerably higher intensity than
those following a little later. Based on the general principles of the
radial method given by I. G. Petrashent, A. S. Alekseyev, B. Ya. Gelichin-
skiy (Ref. 2: Elementarnaya teoriya rasproszraneniya voln [Elementary theo-
ry of wave propagatioal. V. sob. "Voprosy dinamicheskoy teorii uprugikh
voln", vyp. III, izd.-LGU, 1958.), the examination of formulae and tables
for the refraction factor and the formation of head waves taken from the
paper of G. I. Petrashen' (Ref. 3: Materialy kolichestvennogo izucheniya

wave dynamic T. 1-3, 1957-1958.), the authors maintain that the sign of
the first moilo-n of longitudinal waves arriving first at any point of the
medium will be defined by the sign of the function of the source direction.
Hence it appears that the direction of the first motions of the u+ t u-
fields of the source, and consequently that of the u fieldt correspond to
the compression wave. Due to t~e practical importance of the intensity
ratio of various longitudinal waves appearing in the case under study, the
authors examine the waves corresponding to the longitudinal --'rave fronts.
By the formula 1 +
U = 7 (u + U-)' M
as well as by formulae of the radial method (Ref. 2) a calculation has been
developed whose final formulae help to determine the source fields u I, UIV
uIII, and ujV for the P q wave (front zone I), the-P"r wave (front zone II).
the P wave (front zone III), and the ~P"P' wave (front zone IV). The re-

sults of the calculation are given in the form of theoretical seismograms

of longitudinal waves in which each set of curves definezzi the function o"
the direction of the source investigated in the case of a predE,termined
ratio of constants. They show that wave III is weaker than the preceding
head wave with a positive first arrival. It is concluded that the distinc-
tive feature of underground explosions, i.e. the positive direction of the
first arrival, is also present Then the explosion takes place near the rlane
interface. There are 5 figures and 4 Soviet-bloc references.

ABSTRACTs The sorption of In from aqueous, aqua-acotone., aqua-ethanol, and aqua-
ethanol-chloroforn solutions by the cation exchanger KU-2 was investigated.
Practically no abziorption of In by KU-2 occurs in nonaqueous acetone solution.
Addition of smal-L quantities of H 20 to acetone causes a sharp increave in the degrep
of sorption. Ma:,imum sorption tor the hydrogen form of the ion exchanger (-V 92%)
is reached at 15 vol % H 0. The ammonium Tom of the cation exchanger sorbs In scze-
what less effect.ifely. Increasing the amount of water decreases sorption (in pure
water, it did not exceed in pure acetone, which has a low dielectric
constant, the In salt is considerably less dissociated as comparedwith the
dissociation in the presence of small amounts of water. Maximum sorption in the
presence of small amounts of water in solution may occur for sorption of neutral

to the capillary action, the melt fills rte gaps between the slides,
and the thin plates after cooling are separated.from the slides and
t1fe base by immersion in distilled water containing a few drops of
hydrochloric acid. To obtain-plates with large grains (up to several

ABSTRACT: An investigation of the author's method of production of ferro-
magnetic iron oxides (Chem. listy, 1958, 52, 573) based on the earlier method of
A. Kaufman and F. Haber (Z. Elch. angew. phys. Chem., 1909, 733) is
described. The author's method is characterized by the fact that (1) the
operation of FeO-hydrate precipitation is separated from the operation of
oxidation and (2) NaOH is used as a precipitator and NaNq as an oxidizer*

Spherical magnetite was prepared by these two versions of the method: (A) An
acidified aqueotis solution of ferrous sulfate was added to an aqueous solution of
NaOJi at pH w 1Z. 3- IZ. 4, and then the precipitated FeO hydrate was oxidized by
NaNO.; temperature was 20-90C; a protective nitrogen blanket was used in some
of the experimentB; 1B) Same, but the precipitated and stabilized PeO was
oxidized by a batched amount of pure oxygen or air oxygen. It is found that,
under the above conditions and using a strong oxidizer (oxygen), the content of a
nonspinel nonferromagnetic rhombohedral component increases as the process
temperature decreases below 60-70G; this component affects the magnetic
qualities of the final product. Orig. art. has.- 7 figures, 2 formulas, andItable,.~

TEXT: The present work is a.coritinuation of earlier investigztions
by the author with the difference that the radius of gyration-was
calculated for extracted natural rubber. The calculation of the
limiting curve c = 0 is rather complicated in this case and the
author used a modified Zimm-diagram as suggested by J. T.. Yang

by the equation:

TITLE*. Application of Zimm's method for determining the
molecular weight of natural rubber
PERIODICAL: Chemickt zvesti, no. 1, 1960, 3 - 7
TEXTa In this article the average molecular weight is established
of extracted and non-extracted natural rubber by Zimm's extrapo-
lation method, during which the intensity of the d4ffused light
was measured visually. Natural rubber (Hevea Brasiliensis) was
used. The extraotion was made by a mixture of ace-tone and nethyl-
alcohol 1%1 cold. The conventional solvents (tuluene, benzene)
were not suitable for diffui-3ion measurement, due to the small dif-
ference of refraction indic-~s of the solution and the solvent.
Therefore, pure cqolohexane, rectified and dried by metallic sodi-
1= waa used. The concentration of the solutions was determined by
the solvent first in the air and then by drying it to

of extracted rubber and non-extracted rubber are given. The diffd-

difference'by the fact that through extraction and elimination of
the natural mixtures (antioxygens), probably the individual seg-

took place as well as thickening of the coil without any change in
