ABSTRACT. An earlier investigation on the production of strange particles by
7-8 Bev negative pions on hydrogen and carbon was continued vith a 24 - liter
propane bubble chamber. The properties of the neutral pioas inferred from the
photons accompanying the LA1-1BDA hyperon and neutral kaon production are given
and -~xe compared with the properties of tile pions (positive and negative)
emitted in LMMA and neutral-kaon prod-uc-.ion processes. In calculating the
total number of photons, corrections were introduced for the loss of photona

A 24-liter propane bubble chamber in a constant field of

j(ZhETF, v. 38, 426, 1960). The purpose of the experiment'was to
.festimate the fraction of the secondary interactions. An estimate
,:was made for the first time of the fraction of strange particles
iproduced in the secondary processes. The momentum spectrum of the
~A hyperons (in the pion-nucleon center of mass system) was compared
.,with the spectrum for the w p interactions. The following distribu-
,,tion of events over the reaction channels was obtained

The good agreement between the calculated and experimental values of
the spectra of the A hyperons and Ko mesons gives grounds for assum-
ing that the cascade model: holds true for these phenomena. It also
is concluded that the previously observed hard part of the momentum
spectrum of the A hyperons in the pion-nucleon center of mass system
in Tr p interactions is due to an admixture of carbon events, and that
the role of the secondary processes which lead to the production of
strange particles is quite appreciable even on the carbon nucleus.
