TITLE: Determination of the wear of a piston ring irith the
.help of radioactive indic"tors

MXT: The author dealq with experimental research carried out on the
wear of an engine piston ring during the starting-and-heviting-up period
by the use of radioactive indicators. The teiits were conducted on a two-
cylinder engine operating with 4 SAX-14 PS-111 (02-2ch 8.5/11) com-
pressed ignition -and having a calacity of 10 h.p. at 1,560 rrm. No con-
structional changes were performed on the engine, merely the rine nnd
rough oil-puri fi cation filters had been removed. A diagram of the oxperi-
mental installation is 8hown. The seriffIly-produced upper 1;i,iton packing
ring was subjected to activation with the help of irradiation in a
nuclear reagent. After irradiating it for four weeks with a 1012 neutron/
cm2 see neutron flow and after an additional period of one mont.h needed

for the disintegration of 13 54 , IP 32 , etc.. higbly-active isotopes, the

ring became gamma-active by FeW, Before the beginning., of tests, the
specific activity of the ring wts less than 0 .CG m/curie/g. An irradiation
of more than 24 days did not yield any inbstantial reaulta. The G c ti vi ty
of the wear products was measured by allowing the oil to circulate continu-
ously through the comluting device. For this 1-url,,cseq an outside oil cir-
culation system was as.3embled on the experimental installation. To prevent
the wear products from settling, the coml,uting chamber on the comiuting
device was built in the form of it coil. A apecitlly-designee. -3cintillation
coml,uting device perwitted one to increiAse the efficiency of Measuring
the oil radioactivity by 153 timea. The experiment revealed Jiftt the speed
of the ring wear steps decreasing and remains constant after the engine
has run for 55-60 fiours. To determine the effect of the tbe,.u:al strte of
the engine on the dynamics of the ring-wear process during the. starting
period, the temperature of the oil was changed from 9 to 2GOU, and that of
the water from 3 to '10 0C. At the end of each teat day, the o11 was Imri-
fled from the wear Iroducts with the help of u felt filter. ',he following

teristics of the wear change of the piston ring during the st.aring-and-
heatin3-up period of the engine at n = 1, 500 rpm are shown. Eutperiments
showed that the magnitude and thc sloed of wear during the star.ing-and-
heating-up period deFend on the time interval between the stt.rVngs. To
determine the effect of the engine load on the wear, the engine was always
started under the same conditions and merely the load time hi.d been changed.

An account is given of experience gained at the Tomsk
Elect romechanical Plant in the use of multiple dies consiating of
ar. outer housing, a bushing, and a removable insert piece. The
insert piece is made of a hard alloy. The durability of the insert
piece is of the order of 10- IC2 times greater than that of dies
made from steels U10A and Khl2M. The techniquf! of p:--ess-
fitting the insert pieces into the dies is described.

out over the whole length of t'ae threaded portior... The mean
tapped thread diameter and the surface finish of the -thread
were studied in relation to the endurance of the tool, 1116X2
standard nuts were tapped, made of 0.45% carbon steel. The taps
were of 18% tungsten hi-h-speed steel. The tests yielded a
recommended cutting speed of 35 m/min, although for bBst surface
finish much lower speeds are required. The amoLuit of relieving
vias found to have no regular effect on either the mean diameter
or the surface finish.

AWMACT; The GOST 3449-54 does not supply fundamental data, confirm-
ing the need to back off, regarding all cutting threads of
taps with a ground profile. Conoequentlytcol plants
execute this operation according to their o;;n systems and
some factories neglect to do it at all. Tho author stress-
es the necessity for th-is operation. The riles of COST
inspection and testing jaust be adhered to at: as to indicate
the grade of thread fineness. The COST 344'1-54 must show
the necessity to back off all cutting threads with ground
profiles,.the deeree of fineness of the cut threads and the
cutting speeds of tested tape made with different grades
