ABSTRACT: Mellin-Stieltjes transformations are very useful iii
solving problems in which products and ratios of random
variables are encountered. In the first part of this
paper some general considerations and results concernin..n,
the application of these transformations are given, In
particular the relation between the M~tilin-k')tieltjes
transformation, the one-sided Laplace--Ztielt-jes ti-ans-
formation and the chal-acteristic function of a given
distribution is established. Ia the second p_art some
limit and point relations in the class of stable
distributions are studied. For the opecial choice of
the mixing parameter y an eiTlicit oxjjres-.~ion for the
Mellin transformation of the density of stable dis-
tributions is found. The necessity for a ii,,pecial
Card 1/4 choice of the parameter T is explained 1~y the fact

that there is a natural separation of -the stable
distribution into two analytically indelpendent branche.,,.
The explicit Mellin transformation for these branches
makes it possible to establish a whole series o-f
relations between the branches of the stable distributions
as special cases of previously knoim -.relations of the
same type. For the sake of simplicity, all distri-
butions in section I'are, considered as being continuous at
the origin. The concepts "out" and ectuin,;Ier-,cy of ranciom
variables are also determined there. Any random ritriable

PERIODICAL: Xhimicheskays, promyshlennost', 1960, No. 1, 9P. 79 - 80,
TEXT: The problem of the utilization of nitrogen oxiiie waste developing
during the manufacture of some products.of the organic synthesis is dealt
with in the paper under review. The development of a aimplii method for'
the utilization of nitrogen oxide waste in industry is desirable. Them
principal reactions which determine the forming of nitric licid, from nitro-
gen oxide are mentioned and equations for the reactiaii rate are given.
The utilization of highly concentrated nitrogen oxides permits the Pro-
duction of 55~ nitric acid1lin accordance with the equiLtion of equilibrium
of the second reaction-(K p - P"ICIEN02 ). The absorption takoe place in a

simplified gas flow through the system, the gas floir being obtained with
the aid of a vacuum pump of the type RXK (from &aid-resisting alloys).
The arrangement is given schematically (Fig.) and its characteriatio
values are given. The oxygen consumption for a daily produation of 55%

ABSTRACT: Values of the entropy of gaseous ions are often needed
for calculating the entropy of hydration of ions for the
quantitative calculation of a series of cycles in which
Gaseous ions appear in intermediate stages. The calculation
of the entropy of gaveous monatomic particles is carried
out using a well-known equL'tion of itafistical thermody-
namics (1) (Ref 2) in .-.hich the entropy of the rotation of
the monatomic ---2es is neglected. In chemical equilibrium
at medium and high temperatures the a.,itropy of the nuclear
spin can also be negtlected (Ref 2). Thus in the calculation
of the entropy of a monatomic Ion at atand.-;.rd conditions
only the atomic vveight of th,2 particle and the rtatiatical
weic,ht of the eloctronic -,-round leve'l miist tie known. A

Research on the development of nqw varieties of t4ulberry trees
adapted to the climate of the northern regions of the USSR,
revealed the suitability of Khasak Malberry trees' for this pur-
pose. The selection, handling, and rooting of.lijralfied grafts
from Khasak Mulberry trees, after preliminary treiitment of these,
grafts with the new iiatbr soluble form of hateroaiaxin (a calcium
salt) are described in detail. The article is il Ilustrated by two

The substance MGU-22 the last is described as being extremely toxic
to Ihisca domestica L, that has acquired an immunity from DDT. &%peri-
merits on the toxicity of MGU- 22 were performed in Moscoir University
and the Institute of Malaria and Medical 11arasitoloa, and are descri-
bed in detail.
It is concluded that these experiments haje again confirmed the high-
ly toxic effQct of MGU-22, especially, when o:U. is add~~,d to it. But'F
even though this chemical destroys flies imvme to DDT~ it down not af-

flies subjected to the rai.9ou do not perish at o-.icu b-Lit in 48-72 hours;
in the meantime, theii production of ova is not teriainate(L. The authors
