MEMORANDUM TO HEADS OF DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES
For over a hundred years the American Red Cross has provided
assistance to victims of tragic disasters. Not only has the
American Red Cross provided disaster relief in our own country
but, over the years, has come to the aid of people in countries
throughout the world.
The devastation of the Soviet Armenian earthquake is of such
severity that not only is the American Red Cross working closely
with the Alliance of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies of
the U.S.S.R. to provide disaster relief, but is also mobilizing
U.S. support for this effort.
The poignant situation in Armenia has touched the hearts of
thousands of Americans. Recognizing the devastating conditions,
and the needs of the people, the Red Cross is accepting financial
donations to provide aid. Right now the funds that are donated
are being used to provide emergency assistance. Later,
contributions received for Armenia will support the
rehabilitation of the affected area.
Federal employees and members of the Armed Forces have always
responded when they know the need is great. Money is still
needed to provide assistance. The Red Cross is accepting
donations through your local chapter or through its toll-free
number at 1-800-453-9000, or at its post office box at:
American Red Cross
International Disaster Relief
P.O. Box 37243
Washington, D.C. 20013
Checks should be made payable to American Red Cross and earmarked
Soviet/Armenian Relief. You may also use your American Express,
Master Card or Visa credit card with the toll-free call. Please
identify yourself as a Federal worker when you make your gift.
For over a century, the Red Cross symbol has stood as a beacon of
hope and help for disaster victims. We in the Federal government
have an opportunity to join with others in our communities to
support this appeal to bring relief to the people of Soviet
Armenia.
