Beerenberg, a stratovolcano on the Norwegian island of Jan Mayen, is the world’s northernmost active volcano and the only one in Norway. Standing 2,277 m (7,470 ft) tall, the glacier-covered volcano’s last eruption occurred in 1985. Dutch Captain Jan Jacobszoon May discovered and named the island in 1614, and Dutch whalers named the volcano Beerenberg, which means “Bear Mountain” in Dutch, for the area’s polar bears. Jan Mayen now serves as a scientific base and a military outpost.
