The long-dormant Soufrière Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat stands 1,050 m (3,444 ft) tall and became active in 1995, with its most recent eruption in 2013. A massive eruption in 1997 destroyed most of the capital, Plymouth, and rendered the southern part of the island uninhabitable. The government was moved to Brades Estate and other areas in the northwestern part of the island.
