The home of Liechtenstein's royal family since 1712, Vaduz Castle was originally built in the 12th century to control the trade routes on the Alpine Pass. Towering 120 m (393 ft) above the capital city of Vaduz, the castle overlooks the Rhine River and the Swiss Alps and is a landmark in the capital city that is named after it.
Liechtenstein’s national symbol is the princely (or ducal) hat of the ruling family, the House of Liechtenstein. It appears on the coat of arms and was added to the national flag in 1937 to distinguish the banner from Haiti’s flag. The original crown disappeared in 1781 and remains lost, but in 1976, the people of Liechtenstein presented this replica to Prince Franz Josef II on his 70th birthday.
