In 2001, Former Defense Intelligence Senior Analyst Ana Belen Montes was convicted of spying for Cuban intelligence.

Defense Intelligence Analyst Ana Belen Montes received this National Intelligence Certificate of Distinction from Director of Central Intelligence George Tenet on 21 February 1997. She was the Defense Intelligence Agency’s senior analyst on Cuba, but in 2001 authorities discovered she had been spying on behalf of Cuban intelligence for the past 16 years. She pled guilty and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
