Civil Air Transport Flight Map

Colorful cover of a CAT international flight map.

From 1950 to the mid-1970s, CIA owned several proprietary airlines. The first was Civil Air Transport (CAT), founded in 1946 by Claire Chennault, the retired US Army Air Corps general and commander of World War II's famous "Flying Tigers."

With its dedicated pilots and crew, CAT built a reputation for getting the job done even in the most difficult circumstances. CAT was reorganized as Air America and continued to provide mission support and search and rescue capabilities to the CIA during the Vietnam War.
