Dr. Rene Joyeuse's Radio

Artifact Details

Dr. Rene Joyeuse Radio

Dr. Rene Joyeuse (1920-2012) served with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and the Free French Army during World War II (WWII) with heroism, a lifetime of scientific contributions, and civilian support to the US military.

During WWII, he was part of OSS's Operation Sussex, parachuting into France prior to D-Day and gathering crucial intelligence concerning key German installations, underground military manufacturing facilities, supply depots, and German troop movements. This original Mark IV radio was damaged in Joyeuse's parachute-drop into France, leaving it inoperable. It was hidden in a French home for more than five decades until Joyeuse provided it in 2002 to the CIA Museum for display in its OSS Gallery.
