During his 52-year career, Directorate of Operations case officer John Guilsher set the standard for operating under surveillance or in hostile environments. Guilsher spent 21 years overseas, where he played a prominent role in the most significant Soviet-Russian cases after 1955. During his tour from 1977-1980, Guilsher personally led the operation that established and exploited the opportunity offered by scientist Adolf Tolkachev, one of the CIA's most valuable Soviet agents during the Cold War.
