The CIA’s ALPHA Team was sent to Afghanistan in response to the September 11 attacks to overthrow the Taliban and target al-Qa’ida.
Members of CIA’s ALPHA Team partnered with the Afghan Northern Alliance and US Special Forces to strike the Taliban. One officer recalled that at this early point in the war effort he and his colleagues did not rely much on weapons. Instead, their most valuable tools were 3-by-5-inch cards and moleskine notebooks along with mechanic pencils, which they used to record map coordinates and plot assaults.
