Today, the Central Intelligence Agency released declassified material about President George H.W. Bush to honor the former Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) on his 94th birthday tomorrow. The released material includes:

  • A 13-minute video, “I Want This Job,” about his path to become DCI and his legacy at CIA;
  • A 14-minute video, “Farewell Visit to CIA Employees,” that shows his January 1993 visit to CIA Headquarters in the final month of his presidency; and
  • Five documents associated with the farewell visit.

CIA created “I Want This Job” to honor President George H.W. Bush during his January 2016 visit to CIA Headquarters to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his swearing-in as DCI. The video features interviews with President George W. Bush and Secretary James Baker, who served as Secretary of State from 1989 to 1992.

“Farewell Visit to CIA Employees” captures the motorcade arrival of President George H.W. Bush to CIA Headquarters and his address to the CIA workforce, during which he highlights the critical importance of intelligence and awards DCI Robert Gates the National Security Medal.

Providing a glimpse into CIA’s preparations for the 1993 farewell visit, the declassified documents include an agenda, invitation and notice to the CIA workforce, intelligence briefing overview, and internal funding request.

For further details about President George H.W. Bush’s tenure as DCI from 30 January 1976 to 20 January 1977, refer to this featured story.
