Statement by CIA Director William J. Burns on the passing of Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright

With the passing of Madeleine Albright, the United States has lost a remarkable public servant, a wonderful role model for generations, and an eloquent voice in our national discourse.  Lisa and I had the good fortune to work for Secretary Albright at the State Department.  We offer our deepest condolences to her family.

Above all, Secretary Albright was deeply proud of having served as our country’s first female secretary of state, but her legacy was so much more.  Extraordinarily hardworking and adept at managing tough challenges and even tougher people, she had an uncanny ability to break down complex issues in a practical and relatable way.

Secretary Albright was direct and forthright in the face of injustice, both at home and abroad.  Her flair and fearlessness will be deeply missed.
