US Marines visit the historically important World War II B-29 base at North Field, Tinian, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, on 17 November 2015. During their visit the Marines learned about Operations Silverplate and Centerboard, code names for the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The US Army 27th Infantry Division Memorial on Saipan. The 27th Division was initially in Corps reserve and landed on Saipan on 16 June 1944 to support the 4th US Marine Division that had made the initial landings. The division continued to fight along side the 2nd and 4th US Marine divisions for the remainder of the battle.
