The Aldabra Atoll is one of the largest atolls in the world and, with the world’s largest population of tortoises, an important natural habitat for scientific study. The atoll is 30.5 km (19 mi) long and 13 km (8 mi) wide, with four large coral islands and a shallow lagoon surrounded by a coral reef. First discovered by Arab sailors in 916 A.D., the name originates from the Arabic word al-khadra, meaning “the green” and referencing the lagoon’s green reflection on the clouds. Pictured are coral “mushrooms” on the atoll.
