Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa’s highest mountain and the world’s tallest freestanding volcano, is 5,895 m (19,341 ft) high. The origin of its name supposedly is a combination of the Swahili word kilima meaning “mountain” and the KiChagga word njaro, loosely translated as “whiteness” giving the name “White Mountain.” Mt. Kilimanjaro became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and a Natural Wonder of Africa in 2013.

The wildebeest, also called the gnu, is an antelope native to Eastern and Southern Africa. In East Africa, the blue wildebeest is the most abundant big-game species. Wildebeest often graze in mixed herds with zebra, which gives them heightened awareness of potential predators. Wildebeest are a tourist attraction but compete with domesticated livestock for pasture.
