United States Pacific Island Wildlife Refuges

Photos of United States Pacific Island Wildlife Refuges

The Baker Island Day Beacon on the island’s western coast is an unlighted navigation aide and a remnant of World War II. From September 1943 to January 1944, Baker Island was a staging base for US attacks on Japanese targets. Today the beacon is still used as a landmark, but it is no longer maintained and houses albatrosses and hermit crabs.
